About

Back in 1982 Gilda Pianelli was directing theatrical productions for the hotel and restaurant circuit. During auditions Barbara Sloan was one of those talents to which she was introduced. History begins…

The Body and Soul concept started back in 1983 when Barbara Sloan and Gildia Pianelli became artistic partners and working for Jack Penrod of the famous Penrod’s on the Beach and the 1980’stelevissed sensation- Flashdance contests…

This commercial venue gave birth to Body and Soul Dance Theatre, Barbara Sloan as artistic director and Gildia Pianelli as Business administrator and lighting designer. The company remained as a very commercial dance company entertaining at clubs, hotels, condo circuits, private parties, etc

Barbara Sloan, a classically trained dancer, got fed up with the whole commercial side to her choreography even though it paid the bills and decided to redirect Body and Soul’s look and goals. This lead to the revolutionary change. In the 1980’s the world renown Body and Soul Dance Theatre was born. Body and Soul was one of South Florida’s most established modern dance companies. Body and Soul appeared at the Colony Theatre, Baily Hall Theatre and theatres from New York to South America to name just a few. The audience was raptured with this company. With Barbara Sloan’s genius and innovative choreography and the wondourus lighting designs of Gilda Pianelli, this company became the company everyone was talking about in which they wanted to be.

Body and Soul Dance Theatre was in full bloom for a ten year period until one day when the two partners decided that they had other artistic interests. Barbara Sloan commenced her acting career, which is in full bloom right now, and continues to explore her performance art with musician/composer Richard Brookens as Duo DaDa. Gilda Pianelli is a theatre and film director with films circulating at film festivals. Both of these ladies are still best friends and partners at the University Center for the Performing Arts, and have been friends since 1982.

In current times Body & Soul Dance Theatre has a new artistic director: Sheila Scanlan, and a Board of Directors that assist in guiding the company. Barbara Sloan and Gilda Pianelli graciously offered Sheila Scanlan to take over the Body & Soul legacy in June 2002. Since its rebirth, Body & Soul has participated in numerous Adult Concerts at the University Center of the Performing Arts, The 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010 Choreographers Ball, their own concerts entitled Revolutional Sonata: The Rising, Resurrection, Scattered Memories, Psychosis, Encounters, Phases of Love, Opposites, The Movement Project, Psychosis, Dance Through the Ages, and for debut in 2016 Happily Ever After. Body & Soul has done private shows for the Zorrastrian Association of Florida and they have been asked to participate in the Metro Zoo Volunteer Picnic this past April 2004. After being featured at Duende the Broward County Centennial Celebration in 2015 Body & Soul Dance Theatre has taken off and has had a full dance card of local performances and international press mentions. Currently they are working with local art galleries as well as Art Serve to bring dance into the community on a regular basis. The goal being to continue the revolutionary style and limitless creativity into the next decade…
